Arlington Heights IL newborn photographer

Last week I posted a maternity session…and here is their sweet baby boy!  He did amazingly well and they were in and out of there in no time!  I never know what to expect going into a session – I have my typical workflow and not all babies like all poses.  But this guy loved it and was asleep for most everything!  His family opted to focus strictly on him for his session, so we skipped out on parent photos, so they ended up with a gallery filled of images of their little newborn boy.  Plus his perfect skin made my editing a breeze! haha.

Sweet boy and amazing sweet family. I hope I get to see them all again soon!  I love seeing all my newborns grow up. =)

If you’d like to have your newborn photographed in my studio, it’s best to contact me and book as early as you are comfortable.  Because of the time I dedicate to each session I only take on 4 newborn sessions a month. Most moms do this during their second trimester to make sure they get their spot with me!  This means I am already booking into 2019 (I know it seems so early, but people want to claim their spot). I provide everything for your session (besides baby, duh), so you just show up and I do the rest for you!

My private studio is located in downtown Lake Zurich, however I photograph families from Arlington Heights, Chicago, Barrington, Hawthorn Woods, Palatine, and other counties throughout the northwest Chicago suburbs.

If you’d like more information, please check my newborn work here.  Otherwise, please contact me and I am happy to answer any questions you may have or I can get you onto my calendar!

I think this sessions was rescheduled at least 4 times.  The weather would NOT cooperate with us at all for outdoor photos.  And when mom’s due date is just around the corner, you do what you can as a maternity photographer.  Lucky for me my studio in downtown Lake Zurich was nice and toasty, so we opted to do their session indoors.  And it all worked out!

It was so great getting to know this family.  Between this and their newborn session, I learned we have a lot of connections with each other in some form or another.  For example I use to coach at Libertyville HS – she graduated from there!  Getting to know everyone on a more personal level is probably the best thing about my job (besides doing what I love – cheesy, but true).  Plus she’s an L&D nurse, so I am sure she has this whole baby thing down.

My studio’s wardrobe has everything you need to show off that bump for your maternity photos.  Tops, gowns, dresses…it’s all there for you to use!  Making things easy since 2009, that’s what I do!  Maternity sessions are usually scheduled during the second trimester to allow for time to plan your sessions (and if you’re also wanting a newborn photo session, you can schedule that at the same time).  Maternity sessions are completed around the 35ish week mark while newborn sessions are scheduled around when they reach about 2 weeks, Earthside.  My specialty is newborns, but pregnancy definitely deserves to be photographed, as well!  These sessions come with the territory and they’re incredibly special.

Lake County IL newborn photography

Some um-teen years ago when I was in college, I was on the swim team.  I got to meet an amazing group of ladies while on the team and Jen was one of them.  This is baby #2 for her and I am so excited for her family to grow, again! I photographed her little girl when she was a newborn and of course she tagged along to this session, so it was great for me to get to see her again.  She is absolutely loving being a big sister – check out the photos of the two of them together.  Isn’t that the happiest kid you’ve ever seen?

If you are expecting I would love to chat with you!  Since newborns are photographed when they are about two weeks of age, most newborn photo sessions are booked before baby is here – during 2nd trimester is ideal.  My studio is in downtown Lake Zurich where it has all the wraps, hats, props…basically everything you could possibly want for your session.  If you’re also wanting maternity photos, I also offer various tops, dresses, and gowns for you to wear!

Please contact me today for more information on these newborn photography sessions or to check my availability.  If you’d like to see more of my work, please check out my website or Facebook page.

Best clothing for maternity photos

What’s the best clothing for maternity photos?  Are you stressing because you’re terrible about picking something?  Now let’s throw in the fact you’re pregnant and forget it!  This is too hard!

Actually, I got you!  Stop worrying and keep scrolling for some ideas to help! Then head to the bottom for some visuals if that’s more your thing.

Tight clothing!  Yes, tight.  You are pregnant and by wearing tight clothing, your belly will be easily shown off.  Trust me when I say that by wearing something loose and baggy you’re going to look way bigger than you actually are!  Wear something that hugs those curves and show off the belly!  If that’s beyond your comfort level, be sure there is a band or some type of tightness between your bust and belly to help define that area.  Just no muumuus, k thanks.

Layers and accessories! Wearing some pieces of flair can help you create some dimension to your outfit (and if you get my movie reference, you’re now my best friend).  A dress is great, but throw on a cute boho hat that you can pop on and off for photos for a fun look that can help create some variety in your final gallery.  Or in the colder months, wearing a cute cardigan or shrug can also help create some dimension to your outfit.  Plus, if you’re being photographed with other family members the layers can give you some more options of colors and textures to help tie everyone together.  Plus, I know many of us are self-conscious of our arms while pregnant.  Wearing a fashionable shawl or cardigan can help hide those areas we’re self-conscious about.  Plus its mega cute, so win-win.

Colors!  Wearing colors that help you stand out from your scenery great idea.  For example, wearing greens in the forest in the middle of summer when everything is green isn’t the best idea.  Or late fall when things are brown, wearing brown won’t be good, either.  So think of the scenery, think of the dominant colors of where you’ll be photographed, then don’t select colors that will make you blend into it.  You’re being photographed to be seen, so make sure you are visible!  Note: that doesn’t mean wear neon colors! That neon is going to reflect all over the place and make your skin, your partner’s skin, and anything else nearby that same color.  So don’t do it.

Solid colors or patterns?  Both are 100% acceptable.  HOWEVER, sometimes wearing solid colors can hide your curves.  For example, wearing a solid black dress can make it hard to see your belly because any shadows that help to define you won’t show up as well as they would on another color.  Same for wearing solid white, but the highlights don’t show as they should.  The compromise?  Wear something with some pattern or texture to it.  For example, instead of black, go with a charcoal or a black that maybe has some lace or pattern embedded in it.  Or wear a sash or belt around the to of your belly to help give definition.  Go back to the previous suggestion of layers and accessories to help give that definition that you need and want for yourself!

Ask your photographer!  Yes, you read that correct – ask them.  Odds are pretty good that if they have experience with this type of photography then they will have some ideas for you!  Some have a very distinct style you’re drawn to in their work, so all the more reason to ask them for help.  Or, if they’re like me, their studio may also have a wardrobe for you to choose from.  For example, I’m sure you’ve seen the photos out there of the long, flowing dresses. Some which may also split to show off the belly.  You most likely don’t own one of those and have no idea where to find one. They’re not your typical dress, but I know that some photographers (myself included) offer it for their families!  I have a closet filled with tops, gowns, dresses, etc that I know will look great on those round bellies and you can check some of them out here!  If you want to shop on your own, check out Sew Trendy (this link will give you an extra 20% savings)

Need some visuals?  Wish granted!

If you’re stuck, I hope that helps guide to towards a better idea of what to wear.  Or not to wear.  Don’t wear a muumuu.  Or neon colors. Or colors that match everything else.  (Your photographer will thank you if you avoid those, trust me).

If you’re in the Chicago area, I’d love to chat with you about maternity photos!  You can read more about my sessions or you can contact me and I’m happy to chat!  My studio (and maternity clothes) are in the northwest suburbs of Chicago in Lake Zurich IL, but I photograph pregnant mommas from all over!  I’d love to chat with you.
